Spring Manual

Facebook

To integrate a Facebook button on your Spring site, follow these instructions:

Creating a Like button

1. Edit the page in Spring CMS where you wish to add the button.

2. Enter the text 'Like' in the Layout regions editor and then select it

4. Click the 'Insert/Edit Link' button from the toolbar

5. Enter the URL you wish to 'Like' when the button is clicked (see 'About URL's below).

6. Enter 'facebook' (all lowercase) into the 'Rel' field

7. Click the 'Insert' button to create the link

8. Save the page and then preview it

The page should now contain a like button

Creating a 'Recommend' button

Facebook allows you to use the wording 'Recommended' instead of 'Like', to use this option, follow the steps above but enter 'Recommended' in step 2 instead of 'Like'.

Creating a 'Follow' button

Facebook allows you to embed a 'Follow' button, to use this option, follow the steps above but enter 'Follow' in step 2 instead of 'Like'.

Additionally, to embed a follow button the URL you enter in step 5 must be to a Facebook profile page:

i.e. https://www.facebook.com/millstreamwebsoftware

Examples

About URL's

There can be some confusion about the correct URL you need to enter.

1. To allow users to 'Like' your website - just enter '/' as the URL.

2. To allow users to 'Like' the current page - you will need to enter the URL of the current page

i.e. '/view/about-us'

3. To allow users to 'Like' your Facebook page, you need to enter the URL to that page.

i.e. 'https://www.facebook.com/MillstreamWebSoftware'

If you use this option, and nothing is appearing it means the permissions for you page are incorrect (and non-facebook users are unable to view your page). Please contact us for advice.

4. If you wish to use a 'Follow' button, you must enter a URL to a Facebook profile page:

i.e. https://www.facebook.com/millstreamwebsoftware

FAQ

I created the Like button, but it just looks like a normal link when previewed?

Make sure you entered 'facebook' (in all lowercase) into the 'Rel' field and that you only made the word 'Like' or 'Recommend' the link.

I created the Like button but nothing is appearing?

If the URL you used is to your Facebook page, it may be that the permissions are incorrect - and the general public can not view the page. Please contact us for advice.

The like count shown next to the button is less or different to the number of likes shown in facebook?

The 'Likes' shown in Facebook for your Facebook profile page are the likes 'for your profile page in Facebook':

i.e. https://www.facebook.com/millstreamwebsoftware

However, if you entered the URL for your website:

i.e. http://www.millstream.com.au

This will show a different count than your facebook profile page count as it will show the 'like for your website'.

Can I make the Like button larger?

That is the official Like button - it's not possible to embed a larger icon which also shows your Like count.

You can however download static 'Like' graphics at larger sizes from the Official Facebook Brand site.

Can I add a 'Like us on Facebook' or 'Find us on Facebook' button?

There are official 'Find us on Facebook' graphics that you can simply place on your page as an image and then link to your Facebook page.
